How to Get Discounts on Your Auto Insurance

Gas prices are noticeable as they are something we deal with on a daily basis, but auto insurance rates are on the rise as well. With that being said, vehicle owners are trying to find ways to save money on their auto insurance in ways of discounts. There are a number of discounts that a vehicle owner can take advantage of if they qualify as well as a number of things one can do to receive lower rates. Below, you’ll find some ways to get discounted auto insurance – some of which you may have never known even existed.

Pay Your Premiums in Full

Some insurance companies will offer lower rates if a premium is paid in full. If you have the financial resources available to do this, you can save a approximately 10% or so by paying your entire six-month or year premium upfront at once. However, if you are unable to pay in full, you can try to check with your insurance company and see if they offer a discount if you sign up for a direct debit or payment from your checking account to pay your monthly premium.

Reduced Mileage

If you aren’t behind the wheel as much as the average driver then you may be able to receive a discount. This discount is directed towards those that carpool, use public transportation and ride a bicycle to and from work/school. If you use these means of transportation then the annual mileage on your vehicle will reduce and so long as you stay below a certain amount of mileage, such as 6,000 miles yearly, you could possibly get a discount.

Maintain a Clean Driving Record

If you can maintain a clean driving record with no traffic violations, tickets, accidents, etc. then you can save hundreds of dollars. In fact, with your first accident, your premium could raise as much as 40%. Keep in mind that if you are eligible to receive this discount that if an accident or traffic violation occurs while you have this discount on your insurance, the discount will be revoked and it can take several years to recover your driving record in order to be able to receive the discount again.

Maintain a Good Credit Rating

If you can keep your credit report clean, you might be able to receive a discount in addition to an already lower auto insurance premium. Be sure to pay your bills on time, keep an eye on your credit report frequently in order to report any discrepancies, etc.

Install a Safety Device

If your vehicle isn’t already equipped with some type of a safety device, you need to install one not just for the safety of you, your vehicle and your belongings inside the vehicle but to receive a discount for having a safety device. This could include car alarms, automatic seat belts, anti-lock brakes, side air bags and anti-theft devices. Be sure to check with your insurance company to see which security and safety features they offer for their customers.

These are just a few of the many ways that you can get discounted auto insurance. There are plenty of other discounts that you can take advantage of so just check with your insurance agent to see which ones their company offers before you go and make adjustments to your vehicle.
